Functional Medicine
Root Cause functional Medicine for lasting health
Dr. Craig Mortensen of Premier Functional Medicine.
Sick and tired of being sick and tired?
Not sure where to go for help?
We will get to the root cause of your problems.
Functional medicine is a patient-centered, root-cause approach to healthcare that blends conventional medicine, alternative therapies, and natural medicine to create a comprehensive, personalized treatment strategy.
Rather than simply managing symptoms, it seeks to understand how genetics, lifestyle, nutrition, environment, and stress interact to influence health and contribute to disease.
By using advanced lab testing, detailed health histories, and systems-based analysis, functional medicine identifies underlying imbalances in areas such as gut health, hormones, metabolism, immune function, and detoxification.
Treatment plans may include nutrition, targeted supplementation, lifestyle modification, targeted therapies, and when appropriate, conventional medical therapies—working together to restore optimal function, reduce inflammation, improve energy and mental clarity, and support long-term health rather than temporary symptom relief.
Conditions we Commonly help with
We commonly work with patients struggling with autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalance, chronic fatigue, digestive disorders, thyroid dysfunction, weight loss resistance, and brain fog.
In addition, many of our patients come to us after years of searching for answers to more complex or unexplained issues such as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), fibromyalgia, undifferentiated autoimmune disease, and other chronic inflammatory or immune-related conditions.
These are often cases where standard evaluations have failed to uncover the root cause. At Premier Integrative & Functional Medicine, we recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every patient’s history, physiology, and triggers are different, which is why each treatment plan is individualized, data-driven, and designed specifically for the person in front of us — not based on a standardized protocol or generic testing panel.
Functional Medicine FAQs
-
Functional medicine differs from traditional medicine by focusing on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease rather than simply managing symptoms. Conventional care is often structured around diagnosing a condition and prescribing medication to control it. While that approach can be necessary and valuable, it may not always explore why the condition developed in the first place. Functional medicine takes a deeper, systems-based approach. We evaluate underlying factors such as inflammation, gut health, immune dysfunction, hormone balance, environmental triggers, and metabolic health. Instead of a one-size-fits-all protocol, care is personalized based on a patient’s history, physiology, and advanced lab testing. The goal is not simply symptom relief, but restoring function and supporting long-term health through targeted, individualized treatment strategies.

Functional medicine is for individuals who want to understand why they are experiencing symptoms rather than simply managing them. It is especially appropriate for those dealing with chronic or complex conditions such as autoimmune disease, hormone imbalance, digestive disorders, chronic fatigue, thyroid dysfunction, metabolic issues, or unexplained symptoms that have not fully resolved with conventional care.
It is often the right fit for patients who feel like they have “been there and done that” — those who have seen multiple providers, tried different medications, or been told their labs are normal despite continuing to feel unwell. Many of our patients come to us after being told their symptoms are stress-related, age-related, or “all in their head,” yet they instinctively know something deeper is going on. Others simply feel stuck and unable to make meaningful progress despite their best efforts.
Functional medicine provides a structured, physiology-based approach to investigate underlying drivers and create a personalized plan. It is best suited for individuals who are willing to take an active role in their health and commit to sustainable changes designed to produce long-term improvement — not just temporary symptom relief.
-
Functional medicine is not designed for medical emergencies, acute trauma, or situations requiring immediate intervention such as surgery, hospitalization, or life-threatening conditions. In those cases, conventional emergency care is appropriate and necessary.
While our focus is primarily on chronic and complex conditions, we do offer natural, evidence-informed solutions for certain acute issues when conventional medical intervention is not yet needed or warranted. However, when a condition requires pharmaceutical management or specialist care, we will discuss that openly and coordinate with your primary care physician or refer you to the appropriate provider. Patient safety always comes first.
Functional medicine is also not ideal for individuals seeking a quick fix or a short-term symptom patch. Addressing root causes requires a thoughtful, individualized approach and a willingness to engage in sustainable lifestyle and nutritional changes. This is a collaborative process — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
For those who are motivated to understand why they are experiencing symptoms and are committed to a deeper, physiology-based approach, functional medicine can be both appropriate and transformative.

Functional medicine is grounded in established physiology and peer-reviewed research from disciplines such as immunology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, biochemistry, and nutrition science. It does not abandon conventional science — it applies it in a more comprehensive and systems-based way. Rather than focusing solely on diagnosing and managing disease, functional medicine evaluates how multiple body systems interact and how underlying factors such as inflammation, gut dysfunction, hormone imbalance, environmental exposures, and metabolic imbalance contribute to symptoms.
My background in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and the foundational sciences is what originally drew me to functional medicine. I was interested in understanding mechanisms — how and why dysfunction develops at a cellular and biochemical level. Functional medicine aligns with that framework by emphasizing physiology, molecular pathways, and root-cause investigation rather than symptom suppression alone. Clinical decisions are guided by objective data, appropriate laboratory testing, and a personalized interpretation of each patient’s unique health history. The goal is to apply scientific evidence in a way that restores function and supports long-term health.

The timeline for improvement depends on the individual, the condition being addressed, and how long the imbalance has been present. Some patients notice improvements in energy, digestion, sleep, or mental clarity within the first few weeks. However, more complex or longstanding conditions — particularly autoimmune, chronic inflammatory, or metabolic issues — typically require a longer and more structured approach.
On average, patients dealing with more chronic conditions can expect a process that ranges from six months to two years. Functional medicine is not designed as a quick fix; it is a methodical process of identifying root causes, correcting dysfunction, and allowing the body time to repair and rebalance.
This is something I understand personally. As a teenager, I struggled with significant gut issues that were not easily resolved. It took me several years of learning, investigation, and targeted intervention to truly heal. That experience shaped how I approach care today. Restoration takes time, precision, and persistence — but when the underlying drivers are addressed correctly, meaningful and lasting improvement is possible. You can read my personal story here.

At Premier Integrative & Functional Medicine, we do not prescribe medications. Our focus is on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of dysfunction using nutrition, lifestyle interventions, targeted supplementation, and other natural, evidence-informed therapies. Many of our patients seek functional medicine because they are looking to reduce reliance on medications, minimize side effects, and pursue a more root-cause–oriented approach to their health.
Medications can be necessary and life-saving in certain situations. However, in many chronic conditions, they are designed primarily to manage or suppress symptoms rather than resolve the underlying drivers of inflammation, immune imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, or hormonal disruption. Our goal is to improve physiology so that the body functions more optimally.
If a medication is medically necessary, we will discuss that openly and coordinate with your primary care physician or the appropriate specialist. Your safety always comes first, and we work collaboratively when needed to ensure you receive comprehensive care.

Premier Integrative & Functional Medicine is located in Placentia, California, and we primarily serve patients throughout Orange County and the greater Southern California region. Because comprehensive, root-cause–focused functional medicine requires advanced training and a strong foundation in the sciences, there are relatively few providers offering this level of individualized depth. As a result, many of our patients travel from across Southern California to work with us.
While a large portion of our practice is based in Orange County, we routinely see patients from Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Diego, and surrounding states.
For individuals who are unable to travel, we offer online telehealth consultations when appropriate. The personalized, data-driven nature of functional medicine allows much of the investigative and strategic work to be done remotely, making care accessible to patients nationally and internationally.
Over the years, we have worked with patients from across the United States and around the world, including Australia, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Middle East, Egypt, and other regions. Whether in person or via telehealth, our focus remains the same: delivering individualized care designed to identify root causes and support long-term health restoration.

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States.
These are pretty dismal and disappointing stats. And these are now outdated stats. We are spending more and more on “healthcare,” yet we are getting sicker by the day. The U.S. is not even in the top 10 of the world's healthiest countries, yet we spend the most amount of money. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out we are doing something wrong.
The Health of the U.S. has only gotten worse - And functional medicine can help. IF you let it.
Just to drive the point home and scare you just a little bit more here are some more sobering stats. Keep in mind that this is not our fault (you as an individual). Ad a society, YES!
But that not to say that you dont have a part in your health, you absolutely do. Often we have clients ask “why me?”
What they are really asking is “Did I do something to cause this?”
And honestly, sometimes the answer is yes, they did to something to cause it.
But, more often than naught the real answer is that they didn’t do anything to prevent it. They didnt cause it but they may have allowed it. Whether its letting in too much stress, not exercising, getting exposed to more toxins than they should have. Generally its a small accumulation of stuff that we did or didn’t do that adds up and causes a bigger problem.
It’s kind of like death by a thousand needles.
As of 2023, ~76% of U.S. adults report at least one chronic condition, and ~51% have multiple chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, COPD, high blood pressure, obesity, depression). These rates have increased significantly over the past decade. LINK
Compared to similar wealthy nations, the U.S. has much higher rates of obesity (~2.4×), diabetes (~2×), asthma (~1.7×), and depression (~1.3×) — which contributes to worse outcomes and lower life expectancy LINK
Projections for Life expectancy are predicting the U.S. may drop from ~80th in the world to ~108th by 2050. LINK
“Health” care as of 2022 accounts for 18% of US GDP = $4.9 trilliion - Thats with a “T”. LINK
Of that 4.9T, 90% of it is for people with chronic and mental health issues. LINK
YOU GET THE POINT
Symptoms are our body's way of telling us something is wrong.
Premier Integrative Functional Medicine is proud to be one of the foremost authorities on providing patients with quality, personalized healthcare that truly addresses the underlying causes of disease. We are not trying to cover up symptoms of disease.
“My advice is to not cover up the body's means of communication (symptoms), but to look at the root causes and fix those.”
Integrated Functional Medicine looks to get at the root causes of disease and illness by addressing each person individually. Each patient will go through a very thorough history and physical exam (our patients always spend an hour with the doctor). The history and exam will then guide us to which functional testing should be performed. By combining the individual patients history, physical examination and functional medicine testing this will guide us in the treatment protocol for that individual.

Many doctors will address sickness only within that specific function of the body, and not address its myriad other systems. Unfortunately, it's not that simple. We must always evaluate how one reaction may have a beneficial or detrimental reaction somewhere else in the body. The body is not a closed set of systems; it is multiple systems working in concert.
The body is very adaptable and able to compensate for many different things for a long time. However, after so long the body is no longer able to adapt. At this point, the body, mind, and/or soul become sick.
